The Glory Within
“Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?” – 1 Corinthians 12: 29-30 (NKJV)
What do you notice about this verse? What jumped out at you?:
In 1 Corinthians 12, the apostle Paul is discussing diversity and unity within the body of Christ. He discusses how the Church is “one body” and that all within it, possess a unique gifting that is essential to Christ’s mission. Not one gift is more important than the other, and not everyone is meant to have the same gifts. If everyone functioned in the same gifts than there would be lack in other areas that are vital to Christ’s mission.
Paul’s question (s) in this passage highlight the importance of the variety of spiritual gifts within the body of Christ. Not everyone is called to do and be the same things, such as become an apostle, prophet, teacher, etc., and that’s okay! God has a specific plan and purpose for you that differs from the person next to you. In other words, it’s important to run our own race and embrace the unique gifting God has given specifically to “you”. The church functions as a unified body with unique roles and contributions, emphasizing the importance of every member’s role, no matter how big or small, or seen or unseen, all God-given gifts are vital towards advancing the Kingdom of God.
Reflect on the following questions:
1.) Reflect on your role in the body of Christ. Are you comparing your gifts to others, or are you embracing how God has uniquely equipped you to serve?
2.) Seek to discern and operate in the gifts God has given you. Whether it’s teaching, serving, encouraging others, or leading others; each role is vital to the Church’s health and mission.
Speak to the Lord and spend some time in prayer:
Lord, thank You for creating me as a unique part of the Church body. Help me to remain focused on You and You alone. Help me to embrace the gifts You’ve given me. Thank You that I get to use my gifts to glorify You and to serve others. In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen!
